For those of you who don't know, the ego is that little voice you have been trained to believe, that speaks all things negative; telling you what you can't do, what you'll never be, and where you can't go. Your ego is also the voice that causes you to think/act out of anger, jealousy, resentment, and judgement. Your inner guidance system, or your ~ing is that which guides you back to your natural state of love. The two are polar opposites and the seemingly obvious choice to live by would be through our ~ing, yet it appears we mostly think, feel, and act from our ego.
In order to make this Wednesday a "Zenday", I invite you to do as Gabby Bernstein discusses in her book Spirit Junkie, which is to spot check your ego. When you spot check your ego, you allow yourself to become self-aware. Where/when did you have angry, jealous, resentful, or judging thoughts? Are you clinging on to something from the past that has yet to be forgiven? If so, what's holding you back? Are you hung up on an idea about the future that has yet to happen? If so, why are you "future tripping"? By asking these types of questions you open yourself to new possibilities of moving out of the dark, (ego), and into the light, (~ing).
One of my favorite ego spot checks is catching myself gossip, when just a few months ago it was my guilty pleasure. Now, I feel gossip is actually toxic to my body. My head literally starts to hurt when I gossip. It's emotionally draining for me and I'm sure the person on the receiving end doesn't enjoy it much either. I mean, how uncomfortable is it to hear someone trashing someone else?
Does this mean I live a life of perfect harmony with no doubts, judgement, or insecurities? Of course not, but now that I am able to become aware of my ego's darkness, I am one step closer. Anytime you think a negative thought, take a mental note, accept it for what it is not, and move on. Practice ego checking and you shall practice inner peace, harmony, zen.
